Making religion online: the case of Islam

Islam in the digital age is becoming an inescapable reality in the lives of believers, thus introducing a new modality in the understanding of Islamic faith. From now on, the sacred text, rituals, traditions, and fatwas (religious opinions) are accessible and interpreted through the technological prism. This digital approach allows beliefs to be contextualized in the here and now, offering an almost immediate presence and a contemporaneity that redefines the bonds within the Islamic Ummah and shapes an ever-evolving Islamic visibility.

This article by Ali Mostfa highlights the transformation of Islamic religious discourse in the digital age. Digital Islam creates a space where traditional discourse is reinterpreted, allowing for the emergence of new forms of religious expression. The interactive and immediate nature of online discourse fosters dynamic exchange among believers, influencing how they perceive and interact with their faith. These interactions lead to a diversity of religious interpretations and challenge orthodox structures, illustrating the fragmentation of authority and the emergence of new forms of Muslim belief and identity in cyberspace.

Digital Islam presents itself as an ecosystem that conditions the emergence of a new paradigm of digital religious culture, and by extension, a new posture for the believer. Platforms dedicated to Islam play a crucial role in creating a space of collective meaning, bringing together believers from various traditions and regions. The networking of information disrupts the classic communication pattern, blurring the roles of sender and receiver. The message then becomes a traceability indicator, transforming the receiver into a visitor or user, identifiable by their online activity. This digital dynamic redefines the identities of Muslim users.

The article explores the new ways in which the Islamic religious message is being adopted in the digital age, replacing the traditional order of orthodoxy with new beliefs and emerging power dynamics. These transformations reflect a process of internalizing religious knowledge, illustrating the change in the transmission of faith and power dynamics in the digital context.
