Otherness And Spatial Dimension In The Arabic Language And Culture

Etymologically, the noun âkhar from the verb âkhara, rather draws the action of postponing, أَخَّرَ العَمَلَ, or temporarily deprogramming an action. al-âkhar on some other hand does not establish a binary relationship of ‘me’ to the other, but institutes the sense of difference between two things. al-ghayr, the other noun that translates ‘otherness’ is used as a noun to denote in the Arabic language, among other things, the dispositions of exception. Whereas al-ghayriyya is a substantival construction that again refers to the difference between two things. From this point of view, the Arabic terms close to the notion of otherness in the Western sense, al-âkhar as well as the construction of “al-ghairyyâ”, summon the distinction or difference without necessarily meaning opposition.
Based on the above linguistic and cultural postulates, what is the nature of otherness in Islam and what is the logic of its writing in the Qur’anic text?

Lecture given at the 3rd international congress of the PLURIEL network, from 23 to 27 May 2022 in Beirut.
In partnership with Saint Joseph University of Beirut and La Sagesse University.
