Interreligious Dialogue and Artificial Intelligence: Looking Back on the Montreal Conference

From 19 to 21 October 2026, the Université de Montréal hosted the international conference “Interreligious Dialogue ‘Assisted by’ and ‘in Dialogue with’ Artificial Intelligence: Concepts, Approaches and Challenges”, organized by the Pluriel research group “Interreligious Dialogue Assisted by Artificial Intelligence” and TRENDS Global, together with the Université de Montréal and the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Led by Wael Saleh and hosted by Patrice Brodeur, it brought together some thirty theologians, legal scholars, humanities and social science researchers and AI specialists from Europe, the Middle East, the Gulf and North America, in person or online, including several members of the network.

After the welcome addresses, including one by Michel Younès on behalf of Pluriel, and the opening lecture by the anthropologist Gilles Bibeau, four sessions followed on 19 and 20 October: how AI is reshaping knowledge and representations of religion; the concepts, agency and limits of mediation by machines; the analysis of polarization and disagreement in digital space; and, finally, the ethics and governance of AI in religious contexts. One question ran through the discussions: how far can AI move from assistance to mediation without reducing religious plurality or taking the place of human judgment?

The workshops on 20 and 21 October put this question to the test with Dialogia, the research platform presented by Zeyyad Saleh (Université de Montréal): human assessments were compared with the platform’s analyses of a corpus of texts and videos, followed by work on sources, verification, human oversight and ethical principles, before a closing session that brought the results together.

The proceedings of the conference will be published as a collective volume, edited by Wael Saleh and Emmanuel Pisani together with the research group’s scientific committee, within which the development of Dialogia continues.

The full conference programme is available in the announcement published on Pluriel.
